Planting in Ground
- Location: Partial shade (morning sun, afternoon protection). Avoid harsh wind.
- Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Amend heavy clay with compost.
- Hole: Dig 2–3x wider than the root ball, same depth. Do NOT plant too deep—root flare should sit slightly above soil level.
- Planting: Loosen roots gently. Set in hole, backfill with native soil + compost. Lightly firm soil.
- Watering: Water deeply immediately. Then:
- First 2 weeks: every 2–3 days
- Next 2 months: 1–2x per week
- After establishment: weekly in dry periods
- Mulch: 2–3 inches around base, keep away from trunk.
Container Planting (Great for Patios)
- Use a large pot with drainage holes.
- Use high-quality potting mix (not garden soil).
- Water more frequently—containers dry out faster.
- Protect roots in winter (insulate or move to sheltered spot).
Care & Maintenance
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy. This tree hates drought stress.
- Fertilizer: Light feeding in early spring with slow-release balanced fertilizer. Do not over-fertilize.
- Pruning: Minimal. Remove dead or crossing branches in late winter.
- Sun Protection: Leaf scorch happens in hot afternoon sun—provide shade if needed.
No pollination or harvesting needed—this is an ornamental tree. Focus on moisture, protection, and good soil.
