Majesty Palm (Ravenea rivularis) – Planting & Care
Planting in Ground
- Location: Bright light, partial sun. Protect from strong afternoon sun and wind.
- Soil: Rich, well-draining soil. Mix native soil with compost (50/50).
- Hole: Dig 2× as wide as root ball, same depth. Do not plant deeper than it was in the pot.
- Set plant: Loosen roots gently, place in hole, backfill, and firm soil lightly.
- Watering (critical): Soak deeply immediately after planting. For first 4–6 weeks: water every 2–3 days. Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy.
- Mulch: 2–3 inches around base (keep off trunk) to retain moisture.
Container Planting (Patio/Indoor)
- Pot: Use a pot with drainage holes, 2–4 inches wider than root ball.
- Soil mix: High-quality potting mix + perlite for drainage.
- Watering: Water until it drains out. Keep soil slightly moist at all times—do not let it dry out completely.
- Light: Bright, indirect light indoors; near a window.
Ongoing Care
- Water: Majesty palms need consistent moisture. Check top 1–2 inches of soil—if dry, water deeply.
- Humidity: High humidity preferred. Mist leaves or use a humidifier indoors.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring/summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer or palm fertilizer.
- Pruning: Remove only fully brown fronds. Do not over-prune.
- Common issues: Browning tips = low humidity or underwatering. Yellowing = overwatering or poor drainage.
Key Tip
Majesty palms struggle most with inconsistent watering. Keep soil evenly moist and you’ll avoid most problems.
