Planting a Christmas Palm (Adonidia merrillii)
- Choose location: Full sun to partial shade. Needs well-draining soil. Avoid low spots that stay wet.
- Dig the hole: Make it 2–3× wider than the root ball and the same depth. Do not plant deeper than it was in the pot.
- Prep the plant: Remove from container gently. Loosen circling roots slightly, but don’t tear them up.
- Planting: Place in hole so the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Backfill with native soil (no heavy amendments).
- Watering (critical):
Water deeply right after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every day. Weeks 3–6: every other day. After that: 2–3 times per week depending on heat. Soil should stay moist but not soggy.
- Mulch: Add 2–3 inches around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.
- Fertilizing: After 6–8 weeks, use a slow-release palm fertilizer (8-2-12 with micronutrients) 3–4 times per year.
- Maintenance: Remove only dead fronds. Do not over-prune. Watch for yellowing (often nutrient deficiency).
Container Planting (Patio)
- Use a large pot with drainage holes.
- Use well-draining palm mix.
- Water more frequently—containers dry out fast.
- Fertilize lightly but regularly.
Christmas palms are low-maintenance once established and produce small red ornamental fruits (not edible). Keep watering consistent early—this is the most important step.
