Planting Calgary Carpet® Juniper (Juniperus sabina 'Calgary Carpet')
- Light: Plant in full sun (6–8+ hours daily).
- Soil: Well-drained soil is essential. Avoid areas that stay wet.
- Hole: Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and no deeper than the root ball. Keep the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Planting: Remove the container, loosen circling roots, place the plant, backfill with native soil, and gently firm the soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil.
- Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.
Watering
Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water once or twice a week, soaking the root zone. After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings—junipers do not tolerate consistently wet soil.
Care
- Fertilizer: Apply a slow-release shrub fertilizer or compost in early spring only if growth is poor.
- Pruning: Remove dead or damaged branches anytime. Lightly shape in early spring if needed. Avoid cutting into old, bare wood.
- Pollination: No pollination is needed for ornamental landscape performance.
- Harvest: Not grown for harvest.
Container Planting
Use a large pot with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Containers dry out faster than garden beds but should never remain soggy. In cold climates, protect the container roots from extreme winter temperatures.
