Bubba Jones Desert Willow
This is a fast-growing, heat-loving tree with large, pink and burgundy blooms. Plant it in full sun with excellent drainage.
Planting Steps
- Choose a spot with full sun (6–8+ hours) and well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole 2–3x wider than the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball.
- Loosen roots gently if circling.
- Place tree so the top of the root ball sits slightly above soil level.
- Backfill with native soil (no heavy amendments).
- Build a shallow watering basin around the base.
- Water deeply right after planting.
Watering (Critical First Year)
- Week 1–2: Water every 2–3 days, deep soak.
- Month 1–3: Once a week, deep watering.
- After establishment: Every 2–3 weeks in summer; minimal in winter.
- Always water slowly to soak 12–18 inches deep.
Care & Maintenance
- Fertilizer: Light feeding in spring if needed; avoid heavy fertilizing.
- Pruning: Shape in late winter; remove dead or crossing branches.
- Mulch: 2–3 inches, keep away from trunk.
- Pollination: Attracts bees and hummingbirds naturally.
- Harvest: Not applicable; ornamental tree.
Container Planting
- Use a large pot (20+ gallons) with drainage holes.
- Use cactus or fast-draining mix.
- Water more frequently than in-ground but never let roots sit in water.
- May need occasional root pruning over time.
Key rule: Do not overwater. This tree thrives in dry conditions once established.
