Broadmoor Juniper
Broadmoor Juniper is a low-growing, spreading evergreen that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It's drought tolerant once established and works well as a groundcover, on slopes, or in rock gardens.
Planting
- Choose a location with at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Place the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove large air pockets. Avoid adding large amounts of compost to the planting hole.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch 2–3 inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the root ball and surrounding soil are saturated.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall.
- Weeks 3–12: Water once or twice per week, soaking the soil deeply.
- After the first growing season, water only during extended dry periods. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong roots.
Care
- Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if needed.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches or to lightly shape. Avoid cutting into old, leafless wood, as it may not regrow.
- This juniper is wind-pollinated and does not require pollinators. Small berry-like cones may develop on female plants.
- No harvesting is typically required, as it is grown for ornamental use.
Container Planting
Broadmoor Juniper can grow in a large container (at least 20–24 inches wide) with excellent drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix, water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, and avoid letting the pot sit in standing water.
