Gardenia ‘Aimee’ (Gardenia jasminoides) Planting & Care
Planting in Ground
- Choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade (protect from harsh sun).
- Soil must be acidic, well-draining (pH 5.0–6.5). Amend with peat moss or pine bark.
- Dig a hole 2–3× wider than the root ball, same depth.
- Set plant so top of root ball is slightly above soil level.
- Backfill with native soil + organic matter. Do not bury stem.
- Water deeply right after planting to settle soil.
- Add 2–3 inches mulch (keep off trunk).
Container Planting (Great for patios)
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Fill with acid-loving potting mix (azalea/camellia mix).
- Water until it drains fully; never let roots sit in water.
Watering (Critical)
- Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy.
- Water deeply 2–3 times/week after planting; adjust based on weather.
- Check soil: top 1–2 inches slightly dry = time to water.
- Use rainwater or filtered water if possible (gardenias dislike high minerals).
Fertilizing
- Feed with acidic fertilizer (azalea/camellia type) every 4–6 weeks in spring/summer.
- Stop fertilizing in fall.
Care & Maintenance
- Keep humidity moderate; mist if air is dry.
- Prune lightly after flowering to shape.
- Watch for yellow leaves (often iron deficiency—use chelated iron).
Blooming Tips
- Needs stable moisture, warm temps, and good light.
- Avoid moving the plant once buds form.
