How to Plant and Care for a Braided Benjamina Ficus
The Braided Benjamina Ficus (also known as Weeping Fig) is a popular indoor tree known for its glossy green leaves and decorative braided trunk. It thrives with consistent care and is ideal for bright indoor spaces or patios in warm climates.
Planting Instructions
- Container: Choose a pot 2–3 inches wider than the root ball, with drainage holes.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix—preferably one labeled for indoor trees or tropical plants.
- Planting:
- Place a layer of soil at the bottom of the pot.
- Remove the ficus from its nursery pot and loosen roots slightly.
- Position in the new container so the top of the root ball sits just below the rim.
- Fill in around the sides with soil, gently pressing down.
- Water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom.
Watering
- Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry.
- Water deeply and allow excess to drain—never let the pot sit in water.
- Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Care Tips
- Light: Needs bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun.
- Humidity: Prefers 50% or higher. Mist the leaves or use a humidity tray.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Pruning: Trim to shape and remove dead leaves. Regular pruning helps keep its form.
Extra Notes
- Rotate regularly to maintain even growth.
- Can drop leaves with stress—check light, drafts, and watering if this happens.
