Blue Star Juniper (Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star')
Blue Star Juniper is a slow-growing, compact evergreen with striking silvery-blue foliage. It thrives in full sun and is highly drought tolerant once established.
Planting
- Choose a location with 6–8+ hours of direct sun and well-drained soil.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball.
- Place the top of the root ball slightly above or level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil. Avoid adding large amounts of compost unless your soil is extremely poor.
- Water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets.
- Add 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Watering
- Immediately after planting, soak the root ball and surrounding soil.
- Weeks 1–2: Water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall.
- Weeks 3–12: Water once or twice per week, soaking the soil 6–8 inches deep.
- After 3 months: Water only during extended dry periods. Overwatering is a common cause of problems.
Care
- Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer if desired.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid cutting into old, brown wood, as it rarely regrows.
- No pollination is needed since it is grown for its foliage, not fruit.
- Monitor for spider mites during hot, dry weather and ensure good air circulation.
Container Growing
- Use a large pot with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix.
- Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, but never let the pot remain waterlogged.
- Protect the container from extreme winter freeze-thaw cycles in colder climates.
