How to Plant Blue Rug Juniper
Blue Rug Juniper is a low-growing, evergreen groundcover that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.
- Light: Plant in a location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily.
- Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than its height. Set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil and gently firm it.
- Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the root ball and surrounding soil are saturated. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water once or twice a week. After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods. Avoid constantly soggy soil.
- Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stems to prevent rot.
- Fertilizer: Little fertilizer is needed. In early spring, apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer if growth is poor.
- Maintenance: Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches or to lightly shape. Do not cut into old, leafless wood, as it may not regrow.
- Pollination & Harvest: No pollination is required for landscape performance, and there is no harvest. Female plants may produce small bluish berry-like cones that are ornamental.
- Container Planting: It can grow in a large container with excellent drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix, water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, and avoid overwatering.
