Plant guide

Planting & care

Blue Muffin® Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum 'Christom')

Planting: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade (6+ hours of sun gives the best flowering and berry production). Plant in well-drained soil. Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball. Set the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the original soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to remove air pockets. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.

Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week. After the first growing season, water during extended dry periods. Deep watering is better than frequent light watering.

Fertilizing: Skip fertilizer at planting. The following spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer according to the label or top-dress with compost.

Pollination: Blue Muffin® needs a different arrowwood viburnum cultivar nearby (such as 'Chicago Lustre' or 'Northern Burgundy') to produce its bright blue berries. Bees and other pollinators handle the pollination.

Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering if needed, since flower buds form on old wood. Remove dead or crossing branches at any time.

Harvest/Wildlife: The ornamental blue berries are not typically harvested for eating. They are highly attractive to birds, making this an excellent wildlife shrub.

Container planting: Suitable only as a temporary container plant. Use a pot at least 24 inches wide with drainage holes and high-quality potting mix. Water more frequently than in-ground plants, and transplant into the landscape within a few years, as the shrub matures to about 5–7 feet tall and wide.

FAQ

Common questions

Blue Muffin® Arrowwood Viburnum FAQs

1. Does Blue Muffin® Arrowwood Viburnum need a pollinator to produce berries?

Yes. Blue Muffin® needs a compatible Arrowwood Viburnum blooming at the same time to produce its signature bright blue berries. Great pollinator choices include Chicago Lustre, All That Glitters®, or All That Glows® Viburnum. Without a pollinator, you'll still enjoy the beautiful spring flowers and attractive foliage, but berry production will be limited or absent.

2. Will Blue Muffin® Arrowwood Viburnum attract wildlife?

Absolutely. The fragrant white flowers provide an early-season food source for butterflies and other pollinators, while the vivid blue berries become a favorite snack for songbirds in fall. As a North American native shrub, it also helps support local wildlife and beneficial insects.

3. Can Blue Muffin® Arrowwood Viburnum be grown in containers?

Yes, it can be grown in a large container for several years, making it a great option for patios or small spaces. Use a well-draining pot, water regularly, and provide full sun to partial shade for the best flowering and growth. Long-term, the shrub will perform best when planted in the landscape where its roots have room to spread.

4. Is Blue Muffin® Arrowwood Viburnum easy to care for?

Yes. This low-maintenance native shrub adapts to a wide range of soils and growing conditions once established. It requires only occasional watering during dry periods and light pruning after flowering if shaping is needed. It is also generally deer resistant, although young plants may benefit from protection in areas with heavy deer browsing.

5. When do the berries appear, and are they edible?

If a compatible pollinator is nearby, clusters of bright blue berries develop in late summer and persist into fall, adding vibrant seasonal color. While the berries are highly valued by birds, they are grown primarily for ornamental and wildlife appeal rather than for human consumption.
