Blue Chip Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Chip')
Blue Chip Juniper is a low-growing, spreading evergreen with silvery-blue foliage. It is excellent for slopes, borders, rock gardens, and erosion control.
Planting
- Choose a location with full sun (6+ hours daily).
- Plant in well-drained soil. Avoid areas that stay wet.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and only as deep as the root ball.
- Set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove air pockets.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are saturated.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain.
- For the next 2–3 months, water once or twice a week, providing a deep soak rather than frequent light watering.
- After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release, balanced shrub fertilizer if needed.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged growth or to lightly shape. Do not cut back into old, leafless wood.
- This plant does not require pollination for ornamental use and produces small berry-like cones that may attract birds.
- Monitor for spider mites during hot, dry weather and maintain good air circulation.
Container Planting
- Use a large container with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix.
- Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, as containers dry out faster than garden beds.
- Protect the container from extreme winter temperature swings in colder climates.
