How to Plant and Care for a Black Olive Tree
Planting Instructions
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Black Olive Trees prefer full sun but tolerate light shade.
- Dig the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth as the container or root ball. This allows the roots to spread easily.
- Amend Soil (Optional): If the soil is heavy clay, mix in sand or compost to improve drainage and aeration.
- Planting: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the root flare (where the trunk widens at the base) is at or slightly above soil level. Backfill with soil, tamping gently to remove air pockets.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
- Mulch: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it 2 inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
Watering and Care
- Watering: Water deeply 1-2 times per week for the first 3 months. Once established, reduce watering to once a week or less (depending on rainfall).
- Fertilization: Use a slow-release fertilizer (balanced or slightly nitrogen-heavy) twice a year—spring and fall.
- Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove dead branches.
Container Planting
Use a large container with drainage holes. Fill with a well-draining potting mix and follow the same planting instructions. Water more frequently, as containers dry out faster.
