About this plant

Why you'll love it

Black Lace® Elderberry: Bold Color, Elegant Texture

Black Lace® Elderberry combines dramatic color with elegant texture. Its purple-black foliage creates an effect similar to a Japanese maple, making it a striking focal point without the fuss of more delicate trees. Creamy pink flower clusters bloom in late spring to early summer, standing out beautifully against the dark foliage.

When planted near a compatible pollinator, the blooms are followed by blackish-red berries in fall that can be harvested for homemade jams or elderberry wine, or left on the plant to attract birds and other wildlife. Adaptable and easy to grow, Black Lace® adds bold beauty to borders, hedges, and foundation plantings.

Why You'll Love the Black Lace® Elderberry

  • Finely cut, deep purple-black foliage offers season-long color and texture.
  • Creamy pink blooms create a beautiful contrast in late spring and early summer.
  • Blackish-red berries can be harvested for jams and elderberry wine or enjoyed by birds.
  • Provides the look of a Japanese maple with the toughness of an adaptable shrub.
  • Thrives in a wide range of growing conditions with minimal maintenance.
  • Excellent as a specimen plant, hedge, or mixed border accent.

Add Black Lace® Elderberry to your landscape for bold foliage, beautiful blooms, and multi-season interest you'll enjoy year after year.

Pollination

Needs a pollinator partner to set fruit

Black Lace® Elderberry is not self-fertile. It needs a different but compatible variety blooming nearby to set fruit — on its own it will flower but produce little or no crop.

Plant a second, different elderberries variety with an overlapping bloom time within about 50 feet. Bees do the work of moving pollen between the two, so avoid spraying open blossoms.

Planting & care

Black Lace® Elderberry Planting & Care

Planting: Plant in full sun for the best dark foliage color, though it will tolerate partial shade. Choose well-drained soil enriched with compost. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill, and gently firm the soil.

Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting to soak the entire root ball. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rain. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. After establishment (about one year), water during extended dry periods.

Mulch & Fertilizer: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the stems. Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or compost.

Pollination & Fruit: Black Lace® is self-fertile, but planting another European elderberry variety nearby, such as 'Black Beauty' or 'York', improves pollination and increases berry production. Creamy pink flowers appear in late spring, followed by dark berries if pollinated.

Pruning & Harvest: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood and encourage vigorous new growth. Harvest ripe, fully dark berries in late summer. Cook berries before eating; do not consume raw berries, stems, leaves, or unripe fruit.

Container Growing: Grow in a container at least 20–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Use high-quality potting mix, water whenever the top inch of soil dries, and fertilize lightly each spring. Repot or root prune every few years as the plant grows.

FAQ

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Black Lace® Elderberry

1. Does Black Lace® Elderberry produce edible berries?

Yes, Black Lace® Elderberry can produce clusters of dark blackish-red berries in late summer to fall when planted near a compatible elderberry for cross-pollination. The berries are commonly harvested for making jams, jellies, syrups, and elderberry wine. The berries should be cooked before eating, as raw berries and other parts of the plant are not typically consumed.

2. Does Black Lace® Elderberry need another plant to produce fruit?

Yes. While Black Lace® produces beautiful pink flower clusters on its own, planting a different variety of Sambucus nigra nearby improves pollination and is recommended for reliable berry production. Bees and other pollinators help transfer pollen between the plants.

3. Where should I plant Black Lace® Elderberry?

Black Lace® Elderberry grows best in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types, including moist soils. Full sun encourages the richest foliage color and the best flowering. It works beautifully as a specimen plant, privacy hedge, foundation planting, or mixed border accent.

4. Can Black Lace® Elderberry be grown in a container?

Yes, it can be grown in a large container for several years, making it a great choice for patios or decks. Use a high-quality potting mix, choose a container with good drainage, and water regularly since containers dry out more quickly than garden beds. As the shrub matures, it may eventually benefit from being transplanted into the landscape.

5. Is Black Lace® Elderberry difficult to care for?

Not at all. Black Lace® is an adaptable, low-maintenance shrub that is easy to grow once established. Occasional pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages vigorous new growth. Its dramatic dark foliage, contrasting pink blooms, and seasonal berries provide months of interest with minimal effort.
