Black Lace® Elderberry Planting & Care
Planting: Plant in full sun for the best dark foliage color, though it will tolerate partial shade. Choose well-drained soil enriched with compost. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill, and gently firm the soil.
Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting to soak the entire root ball. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rain. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. After establishment (about one year), water during extended dry periods.
Mulch & Fertilizer: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the stems. Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or compost.
Pollination & Fruit: Black Lace® is self-fertile, but planting another European elderberry variety nearby, such as 'Black Beauty' or 'York', improves pollination and increases berry production. Creamy pink flowers appear in late spring, followed by dark berries if pollinated.
Pruning & Harvest: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood and encourage vigorous new growth. Harvest ripe, fully dark berries in late summer. Cook berries before eating; do not consume raw berries, stems, leaves, or unripe fruit.
Container Growing: Grow in a container at least 20–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Use high-quality potting mix, water whenever the top inch of soil dries, and fertilize lightly each spring. Repot or root prune every few years as the plant grows.
