Bar Harbor Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis 'Bar Harbor')
Bar Harbor Juniper is a low-growing, spreading evergreen that works well as a groundcover, on slopes, in rock gardens, or cascading over retaining walls. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.
Planting
- Choose a location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with native soil and gently firm it to remove air pockets. Avoid adding large amounts of compost to the planting hole.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the stem.
Watering
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are soaked.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall.
- For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once a week, adjusting for weather.
- After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods.
- Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong root growth. Avoid constantly wet soil.
Care
- Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer if needed.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches or to lightly shape. Avoid cutting into old, leafless wood.
- This plant does not require pollination for ornamental use and produces small berry-like cones that may attract birds.
- Watch for spider mites during hot, dry weather and ensure good air circulation.
Container Planting
Bar Harbor Juniper can grow in a large container with excellent drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix, water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, and protect the roots from extreme winter cold if growing in a pot.
