Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens) Planting & Care
Planting in Ground
- Location: Bright, indirect light or partial sun. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and cold drafts.
- Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Mix native soil with compost.
- Hole: Dig a hole 2x as wide as the root ball, same depth.
- Planting: Place palm so top of root ball is level with soil. Backfill and lightly firm soil.
- Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. Then keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) for first 6–8 weeks.
Container Planting (Great for Patios)
- Pot: Choose a pot with drainage holes, 2–3 inches wider than root ball.
- Soil Mix: Use palm or indoor potting mix with added perlite for drainage.
- Watering: Water until excess drains out. Let top 1–2 inches dry before watering again.
Ongoing Care
- Water: Keep consistently moist but never waterlogged. Reduce in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity—mist occasionally indoors.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 6–8 weeks in spring/summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer or palm-specific fertilizer.
- Pruning: Remove yellow or dead fronds at the base.
- Temperature: Keep above 60°F (16°C).
Extra Tips
- Yellowing leaves = overwatering or poor drainage.
- Brown tips = low humidity or inconsistent watering.
- No pollination needed; grown for foliage.
Keep it simple: bright light, steady moisture, good drainage.
