How to Care for a Fresh-Cut Fraser Fir
Fresh-cut Fraser Fir trees are popular for Christmas due to their lovely fragrance, sturdy branches, and excellent needle retention. Here’s how to properly care for your tree to keep it fresh throughout the holiday season:
Before Bringing Indoors
- Fresh cut: Make a fresh cut of about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the trunk. This helps the tree absorb water better.
- Place in water immediately: If you're not setting it up right away, store it in a bucket of water in a cool, shady spot outside.
Setting Up Indoors
- Choose the right spot: Keep the tree away from direct heat sources like radiators, fireplaces, or vents, which can dry it out quickly.
- Tree stand: Use a stand that holds at least 1 gallon of water to ensure the tree stays hydrated.
- Water daily: Check and refill the water daily. The tree can drink up to a gallon a day, especially in the first week.
- Additives: There's no need to add anything to the water. Fresh, plain water is best.
General Tips
- Monitor dryness: If the tree becomes dry, it’s a fire hazard. Remove it from the house after the holiday season or if it starts losing many needles.
- Disposal: Recycle the tree or turn it into mulch, rather than sending it to a landfill.
With proper care, your Fraser Fir should stay fresh and beautiful for 4-6 weeks.
