AboutPear Trees

The fruit tree that practically grows itself. Pears are among the easiest fruit trees to grow — disease-resistant, long-lived, and productive — with a cloud of white spring flowers that doubles as serious ornamental value.

Frequently asked questions

Do pear trees need a pollinator?

Most pear varieties need a different variety nearby for cross-pollination. A few are partially self-fertile but produce more with a partner.

When do pear trees produce fruit?

Most pear trees start bearing 3–5 years after planting and ripen in late summer to early fall.

What's the difference between European and Asian pears?

European pears (like Bartlett) ripen off the tree and have soft, buttery flesh. Asian pears ripen on the tree and have crisp, apple-like flesh.
