Grow a Tasty, Tropical Mushroom

Pink Oyster is a tropical strain that produces beautiful clusters of light pink to deep pinkish-red caps that are a favorite at farmers' markets. They are succulent and savory, and have a denser texture than other oyster varieties. They are great for beginners because they colonize quickly and are reliable producers in warmer temperatures.

When cultivated outdoors, pink oysters fruit prolifically throughout summer. As a tropical strain, they also thrive with higher humidity. Note that they are not cold tolerant and their shelf life is shorter than other oyster varieties.

Recommended use:

 • Pink oyster sawdust spawn is only recommended for use in outdoor beds, containers, and buckets.
 • Pink oyster sawdust spawn must combined with a substrate (like straw) in order to fruit.
 • Please note: Pink oyster mushrooms do not grow on logs.

Upon receiving your spawn:

Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Please note pink oyster mycelium is a pale pink color which may be harder to see than other species. All spawn leaving our warehouse is fully colonized and ready to use.

Planting Directions

How to Plant and Grow Pink Oyster Mushrooms (Sawdust Spawn)

Temperature Requirements: Only plant when daily temperatures are consistently above 50°F. Pink oysters will die below 40°F and will not survive the winter in colder zones.

Storage: If not using immediately, keep the sealed spawn in the fridge (not freezer) for up to 6 months.

Step-by-Step Outdoor or Container Planting

Prepare the Straw Substrate:

Use clean, chemical-free straw or agricultural byproducts like bean hulls or corn stalks.

Chop straw into 2–4" pieces for best results.

Optional: Soak straw in hot water (around 160°F) for 1 hour to reduce contamination, then drain.

Layering (for outdoor beds or containers):

Use a 5-gallon bucket with holes drilled for airflow or a raised outdoor bed.

Start with a 2–3" layer of moist straw.

Sprinkle a thin layer of spawn (break it apart by hand).

Repeat layers until full. End with a straw layer on top.

Watering: Lightly water the entire setup until moist but not soggy. Maintain consistent moisture by misting daily or as needed. Avoid overwatering.

Placement: Place in a shaded, humid area out of direct sun. For containers, keep them off concrete to prevent overheating.

Harvesting

Mushrooms will fruit in 10–21 days. Harvest clusters when edges start to curl upward.

Cut at the base with a clean knife. Continue misting daily for multiple flushes.

FAQs

FAQs: Organic Pink Oyster Mushroom Sawdust Spawn

1. What do I need to grow pink oyster mushrooms from this spawn?
You’ll need a proper fruiting substrate like pasteurized straw, and a suitable container such as a bucket, outdoor bed, or grow bag. The spawn must be mixed with substrate—pink oysters will not grow directly on logs.

2. Can I grow pink oysters indoors?
It’s possible in a warm, humid environment like a greenhouse or controlled indoor setup. However, this sawdust spawn is best suited for outdoor use where warm summer temperatures and high humidity support vigorous fruiting.

3. Why is my spawn a light color—is it still viable?
Yes! Pink oyster mycelium is naturally pale pink, which can be less visible than the bright white seen in other mushrooms. Rest assured, all spawn shipped is fully colonized and ready to use.

4. What’s the ideal climate for pink oyster mushrooms?
They love warm, humid conditions and fruit prolifically during summer. They're tropical, so they don’t tolerate cold well and are not a great choice for cooler climates unless grown during peak warmth or in a controlled setting.

5. How soon should I open and use the spawn once it arrives?
Open the shipping box right away. Then unfold the top of the spawn bag to create air space and ensure the filter patch is clear. This allows the mycelium to breathe and stay healthy until you’re ready to use it.
