Planting Flame Thrower® Redbud Tree
Choose a location with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Ensure the spot has enough room for the tree to mature, as Flame Thrower® Redbuds can reach 15-20 feet in height and spread.
Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
- Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball.
- Remove the tree from its container and gently loosen any circling roots.
- Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it's standing straight.
- Backfill the hole with native soil mixed with compost, tamping down as you go to remove air pockets.
- Water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
- Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree, avoiding direct contact with the trunk.
Care and Maintenance
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the first growing season. Reduce frequency once established.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain shape.
- Pests/Diseases: Monitor for signs of pests or disease and treat accordingly with appropriate horticultural products.
Flame Thrower® Redbuds do not require pollination assistance as they are self-fertile. Enjoy the stunning foliage and spring flowers. No routine harvesting is necessary, but you can collect seed pods in fall if desired for propagation.
